Our Teaching Approach

How we teach: Mathematics

The Talent 100 Mathematics Program helps students maximise marks by developing strong foundations in mathematics, and helping students develop mistake-free processes when setting out questions. Our course helps students:

  1. Develop a solid first-principles understanding of mathematical principles that teaches student to understand formulae, rather than to memorize them
  2. Familiarize students with the typical range of questions that are encountered in exams, so that they can select appropriate methods to solve them
  3. Breakdown typical question types into easy-to-follow steps that students are able to repeat and internalize
  4. Provides challenge questions akin to 'last questions' of exams to stimulate and advance students.
  5. Present solutions in a logical fashion, with the correct setting-out, so as to avoid careless mistakes.

Students of the weekly success program receive:

A Talent 100 Workbooklet that methodically covers the topic area, with clear explanations of the key theory and skills required in the syllabus. During the seminar , the teacher will explain the theory and introduce typical question types, showing students how to attack such questions in step-wise fashion. Students are then required to perform examples to re-enforce their understanding and to give them sufficient practice to internalize these methods. Talent 100 Examination Style Homework that reinforces the methods learnt in class, and challenges students to perform their work under examination conditions to improve their exam technique. The Talent 100 homework progresses in difficulty, with a last question that aims to challenge students. Homework is marked and given back at the end of the lesson, so students are given critical and timely feedback as to the mistakes they make. This gives the students the opportunity to learn and improve on a weekly basis.

Topic Tests, at the end of each topic, which students sit under exam conditions. This forces students to integrate their learning in an exam situation, and gives the student critical feedback on the type and variety of mistakes BEFORE they sit their tests at school

Personalised Attention and Directed Feedback through the Tutorial System, so that students are able to clarify any conceptual difficulties, receive individual assistance for their Talent 100 or school homework.

How we teach: Physics and Chemistry

The Talent 100 Physics and Chemistry courses helps student achieve the highest marks in Physics and Chemistry by helping students develop a mastery of the concepts HSC syllabus, whilst showing students how to compose perfect answers to questions involving calculations, explanations and research.
The HSC Physics and Chemistry courses do not simply test 'hard' Physics and Chemistry, but requires students to have a very strong appreciation of the social, historical and environmental context of the Physics and Chemistry.  This means that is not the best chemists and physicists who score the best marks, but in fact, those who are able to write the most articulate responses to specific question types.

Our course helps students:

  1. Develop a conceptual mastery of the key theory, teaching students how to understand scientific principles, rather than merely memorizing.
  2. Giving specific methods to specific question types, so students know exactly what is required of them when responding to 4-8 marks questions.
  3. Develop mistake-free methods of solving scientific calculations so students do not drop easy marks.
  4. Covers every single syllabus dot point, including practicals and research questions that are often ignored by students
  5. Answers are written by the students who came 1st in NSW in 2007 and 20008 so students can absorb and internalise the process of writing full marks responses.

Students of the weekly success program receive:
A Talent 100 Workbooklet that methodically covers the topic area. The Talent 100 Physics and Chemistry workbooks are organised on the principle of exam-relevance, ensuring student know exactly what is required of them. Our workbooks are:

  1. Complete, covering every single dot point, including practicals and research that are usually time consuming to find answer to
  2. Comprehensive, so that students are able to answer all dot points to a FULL MARKS standard, rather than merely 4 out of 5 or even 6 out of 7.
  3. Concise, so that students are taught exactly what is in the syllabus and are not overloaded with information

Talent 100 Examination Style Homework that consolidates the students understanding, whilst challenging students to develop perfect examination practice. Our homework is set examination style with 15 MCQ and 60 marks of written answers (that reflect the question pattern of the HSC), just like sections A and B of the science papers.

Not only are students forced to write solutions to typical calculation and explanation style questions, they are forced to answer questions on all parts of the syllabus, including the often neglected practicals and history-society-environment questions that are worth 5 marks or more.

How we teach: English

The Talent 100 English helps students score maximum marks in HSC English by showing students exactly what is required of them by the syllabus; developing a strong understanding and personal interpretation of the prescribed texts; and helping them compose well-structured and reasoned arguments to examination questions.

We offer courses for:
Paper One: The Area of Study - Belonging
Paper Two: 'The Modules'

  1. Module A: Texts and Time
  2. Module B: Critical Study
  3. Module C: Representation and Texts

Our course will show students how:

  1. Develop a solid understanding of the key skills and competencies specific to HSC English
  2. How to understand what the examiner is looking for in each section of the HSC.
  3. How to compose A-range responses (with sample responses written by students who topped the State in 2005, 2006 and 2007 HSCs)
  4. Comprehensive workbook with HSC style questions and sample hours.

In each 3 hour lesson, a Talent 100 instructor will guide the students through the key theory to develop a comprehensive understanding of the course material. Our small class sizes allows for interaction and participation, and in each lesson, there will be class activities so that students learn to apply and consolidate the skills and concepts that have been taught. Each week, there is a 40 minute homework writing task (exactly like the HSC), so that students are accustomed to the style, structure and rigor of HSC examinations. This forces students to integrate what they have learnt in examination timings.
